Another Win for Altitude Angel: Unmanned Traffic Management to be Deployed in Norway

January 16, 2020 by Miriam McNabb 7 Comments

As the need for Unmanned Traffic Management (UTM) frameworks to be implemented becomes clear, UTM providers are competing to provide the base technology to governments around the world.  The race isn’t all about the individual contracts: it’s also about the opportunity to demonstrate a methodology that will work – and scale – for other areas.

One of the primary aspects of a UTM system is the ability to prevent conflicts between manned and unmanned aircraft: so the partnership between Frequentis, the global leader in Air Traffic Management solutions and Altitude Angel, a major name in UTM, has been a productive one.   The two partners will jointly provide Norwegian air navigation service provider (ANSP) Avinor with a UTM platform to be deployed at 18 airports across Norway.

The following is an Altitude Angel press release.

London, UK & Vienna, Austria; Frequentis, the world’s leading Air Traffic Management (ATM) solutions provider and Altitude Angel, the industry leading UTM (Unmanned Traffic Management) technology provider, will jointly deploy a national UTM system for Norway.

Following a competitive procurement process, the solution, presented jointly by partners Altitude Angel and Frequentis, will provide Norwegian ANSP Avinor with a technically advanced UTM platform, allowing the organisation to begin safely integrating drones into controlled airspace at 18 airports across Norway.

“Frequentis is proud to have been selected, together with our partner Altitude Angel, for the delivery of the first nation-wide Unmanned Traffic Management (UTM) System to support Avinor’s goals for the safe and efficient integration of drones into Norwegian airspace. Our future-proven and scalable UTM services are critical for meeting the current and future demands of evolving drone technology, set to transform critical industry, paving the way for drone delivery services to be supported sooner than anticipated.”, says Frequentis Vice President ATM, Hannu Juurakko.

The joint Altitude Angel/Frequentis UTM solution is a first for Norway as it begins to build the structure to allow the safe integration of UAVs into controlled airspace.

“Norway is a very forward thinking and technologically savvy country in which the use of drones and UAVs will undoubtedly form a key part of its future tech-economy.  Altitude Angel and Frequentis will provide Avinor with the tools to integrate drones and general aviation on one platform,” added Richard Parker, Altitude Angel, CEO and founder.  “This is just the first step to enabling future BVLOS flights, ultimately opening the skies above Norway to drone operations ranging from SAR and blue light support to commercial package delivery. We’re pleased to bring our industry-leading technology to bear to open up Norway’s skies.”

Norway will be the first country in the Nordic region to implement a UTM system, highlighting Avinor Air Navigation Services’ dedication to the industry. Being at the forefront of the drone development, the technically advanced UTM solution will provide Avinor Air Navigation Services the means to accelerate safe integration of drones and help to further increase the use of this technology in Norwegian airspace for years to come.

Altitude Angel and Frequentis will begin delivering the UTM solution to number of Avinor airports in Q2 2020, with the programme being widely rolled out during Q3 and Q4.
