Nokia Files Trademark Application for Drones – OVNI

August 24, 2017 by Frank Schroth 10 Comments

Nokia, the Scandavian technology firm that was once a mobile phone powerhouse, has filed a trademark application with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) for civilian and military drones. The trademark they are seeking for these drones is OVNI.

This news comes to us from LetsGoDigital, a site covering all things digital based in the Netherlands.

Guest post from LetsGoDigital —

Nokia OVNI drones in development : Nokia is back on stage this year. The Finnish manufacturer doesn´t only try to get back in the global smartphone market. The manufacturer also intends to step into the drone market. Beginning this year, Nokia released a series of drones in Dubai and last month Nokia published a teaser video on YouTube, the Finnish company is working on its own advanced drone network. We think we know how the premium Nokia branded drones will be called. The company has filed a trademark application for the name OVNI at the EUIPO (European Union Intellectual Property Office). This brand registration was submitted yesterday. The Nokia OVNI trademark is included in the “Civilian and Military Drones” classification category, in combination with “Telecommunications.”

The recently published teaser video shows various working Nokia drones, deployed around factories, for inspections, surveillance and security. The drones have LTE connectivity and are connected through the cloud.

In Dubai, Nokia announced a so-called “Ultra Compact Network” base station at the UAE Drones for Good Award Event. The base station establishes connectivity between video camera-equipped drones and a control center via a fast 4G LTE connection.

Due to the addition of LTE network support, Nokia OVNI drones can also be of great assistance during rescue operations, when fast communication is a must.

There is currently no information about an official launch or release date of these new Nokia drones.

Although drones are well represented on the IFA, it remains to be seen whether the trademark is approved on time, IFA 2017 takes place from 1 to 6 September in Berlin, Germany.
