Compared to the majority of consumer technology available today, drones are still well behind when it comes to design. Sure, in terms of functionality they are rapidly evolving. But that’s not to say that they couldn’t look a little cooler. This is of course completely subjective – you might love the look of your drone and the fact that it’s pretty much indistinguishable from thousands of others. But industry heavyweight DJI disagrees, and has launched an online design platform with a view to shipping pre-customized Phantom 4s to the masses.
Before you ask, this is in no way the world’s most successful drone company handing over the reigns for hackers to modify and customize the hardware or software – this is purely superficial. DJI’s Make It Yours (MIY) platform is simply open for Phantom 4 pilots to design their own shell. The platform facilitates the design process, and even allows you to check out what the finished product will look like through a superimposed, 3D rendering that you can view from every angle.
Anyone who is an account holder is free to submit potential designs to DJI for assessment, and the company is planning to produce a selection of the best. In the future though, DJI say that every user will be able to choose their Phantom 4‘s cover design.
Just as other consumer electronics have transcended their industry to become fashion statements as well as tools, there is no reason why drones won’t someday do the same. As more people embrace UAV technology, the market for design additions and personal touches such as DJI’s MIY platform is only going to grow.
