Jaguar and DJI have teamed up to show the world what a game of chase between a car and a drone might look like. They say it was a way of exhibiting the potential of drone technology, but we reckon they just wanted to have a bit of fun. If you’ve ever wanted to know if a car can outrun a drone, you might want to watch the video below.
Car manufacturer Jaguar set the scene for a ‘cat-and-mouse’ chase between an XJ sedan and a DJI Inspire 1 drone, and the two raced around the Zhuhai International Circuit racetrack in China. Professional stunt driver Mark Higgins, known for his help in several James Bond movies, was behind the wheel of the Jag, whilst pilot JaeHong Li had control of the DJI drone.
It may have been a simple publicity stunt, but this could be a glimpse into how Hollywood car chases might be filmed in the not too distant future, or even the start of another sport entirely. After the contest, the man behind the DJI controls, JaeHong Li said “Flying against the car gave us some interesting insight into how this kind of technology can be used for filming cars – and I think we’ve shown there’s some big potential for future movie car-chase sequences.
Technology in drones is developing fast, and like cars, the latest trend is for pilot assistance. The DJI Inspire 1 drone we used is more about precision and poise than outright pace. It has the best-in-class, stabilized Zenmuse X5 aerial camera aboard, as it is mainly used for filming, and was perfect for this challenge.”
