Beware FAA Registration Scams

January 25, 2016 by Frank Schroth 25 Comments

Where the government requires registration there are going to be less than honest firms looking to take advantage of the unwary. So it is with the recently enacted FAA registration process for recreational drone users.  Drivers have long been the prey of online sites assisting with state automobile registration. These sites are now looking to take advantage of newbie drone operators.

The following top the search results on Bing for “FAA drone registration”:

FAA registration scams

These sites are designed only to take money out of unsuspecting users pockets and should be avoided.

The correct site for FAA registration is http://www.faa.gov/uas/registration/. Accept no substitutes. The FAA registration system is simple, straightforward and only costs $5.00.

They got me for $20. So their scam is getting even more expensive and they did nothing for me since I didn’t order labels or card. What a ripoff! I’m glad I used a credit card. I will be disputing this and getting my money back.

I was ripped off by drone-registration.net yesterday, I knew they weren’t the official place to go to but I figured I’d bite on the id card and labels.. well my bill ended up coming to 115.00, I sent an email immediately to fix the issue but I never received a response back. now I have a 115 dollar bill for a couple stickers and piece of plastic.

To ANY reasonable person this ad is intentionally misleading. It is carefully crafted with obvious intent. If the purveyors of this fraud wanted to be honest there would be a banner at the top saying ” THIS SITE WILL NOT REGISTER YOUR DRONE! ” And please, no more BS from “Staff members” it just makes me want to spit! Go home, smile and tell your children “your daddy sells lies”.

I also attempted to register my drone through this site by mistake. Was my fault for not looking carefully but I realized my mistake minutes after clicking “purchase.” I’ve submitted 4 customer support tickets and have yet to hear back from anyone. Huge scam. I will be contacting my credit card company.

Sorry to hear Steve. Unfortunately this site doesn’t provide any actual registration. They only provide labels, but it sounds like they haven’t come through on that for some people either. As I posted for another, you can read more about this “drone-registration” website here: http://www.phantompilots.com/index.php?threads/For-New-Drone-Registration%2E%2E%2E-Only-use-the-FAA-site%2E–Avoid-www%2Edrone-registration%2Enet%2E.77408/

      Hello Chris,

I’m a staff member of drone-registration. Has this been remedied? Did you send in a support ticket through our zendesk? I did a cursory search of your name and do not see anything in our database.

Ken Williams, I’ve tried to raise awareness about this scam. It’s been very frustrating to see how this “drone-registration” website presents itself the way it does. As you plainly state: they don’t provide registration!! I posted a thread to raise awareness on a popular drone forum. A couple of the forum members (who must have been tied to the drone-registration website) tried to defend the drone-registration site and then tried to derail my thread about it. So my thread was removed. So I then posted a simple thread that could hopefully spread awareness and keep the message simple and not be derailed by these people. I spell out the warning plain and simple. You can see my thread here: http://www.phantompilots.com/index.php?threads/For-New-Drone-Registration%2E%2E%2E-Only-use-the-FAA-site%2E–Avoid-www%2Edrone-registration%2Enet%2E.77408/

The fine print may say that, but the form and how they state it clearly is misleading and I filled in info on a form that said “Register your drone” and also said
Drone Registration is a Secure Site that assists in processing the FAA requirements for registration of drone owners. Drone registration representatives will assist the registration process from start to finish. Once your information is officially processed, you will receive a registration number that must be marked on each of your drones. Registration is valid for a period of 3 years. Drone operators may order FAA compliant marking labels as well as the Flight ID Card which contains your certificate of registration information. These products and services are customized for your order, therefore all sales are final. You must be 13 years of age or older. By continuing with the form, I agree to the Terms of Service & Privacy Policy.
and I paid fhem to register the drone. Its semantics but it looks to the lay person as if you are filling out the registration. They never sent me an email with a REG ID nor a link to FAA. but they did take my $10 and I will get it back!!!

Yes, I was ripped off by drone-registration.net. They charged me $14.95 to direct me to the correct FAA site. I used Pay-Pal so they got their money before I received the eMail directing me to FAA.
