Airspace Security at 2026 JUNO Awards

April 6, 2026 by Miriam McNabb Leave a Comment

RF-Cyber counter-drone system enables non-disruptive protection for large public event

D-Fend Solutions announced that its EnforceAir counter-drone system was deployed to support airspace security during the 55th Annual JUNO Awards in Hamilton, Ontario. The event took place on March 29, 2026, at TD Coliseum and drew about 19,000 attendees, along with thousands more in surrounding areas.

The deployment highlights how public safety agencies are using counter-drone systems to manage airspace at large events. These environments often include VIPs, government officials, media crews, and dense crowds. Each factor increases the need for clear airspace awareness and coordinated response.

Supporting Airspace Safety Without Disruption

D-Fend’s EnforceAir system uses RF-based cyber technology to detect and manage unauthorized drones. The system does not rely on jamming. Instead, it allows communications and approved drone operations to continue without interruption.

“Large-scale public events like the JUNO Awards pose uniquely complex security challenges, where maintaining safe and controlled airspace is just as critical as securing the ground,” said Zohar Halachmi, Chairman and CEO of D-Fend Solutions. “This EnforceAir deployment demonstrates how new generation advanced RF-Cyber technology can seamlessly integrate into existing operations, providing real-time awareness and actionable intelligence without interfering with communications and operations, including authorized drones in the airspace.”

This approach reflects a growing trend in counter-UAS strategy. Agencies are looking for solutions that protect airspace without affecting other systems. At major events, reliable communications are essential for both safety and operations.

Integration with Local Law Enforcement

The EnforceAir2 (EA2) system was deployed as part of a joint RPAS unit. It was integrated into the Hamilton Police Emergency Operations Centre. This setup provided a shared operational picture with real-time airspace awareness.

The system supported police drone teams by detecting, locating, and identifying drones in the area. It could distinguish between authorized and unauthorized drones in real time. This allowed for faster and more coordinated responses when needed.

By feeding data into a central command center, the system helped align decisions across teams. This type of integration is becoming more common as public safety agencies adopt drone programs with formal structures and defined processes.

Growing Demand for Non-Disruptive Counter-Drone Solutions

Police services across Ontario are evaluating advanced counter-drone technologies for large public events. These include concerts, sports events, and other mass gatherings. The goal is to maintain safety while allowing normal operations to continue.

RF-Cyber technology is gaining attention because it avoids interference with communications networks. This is especially important in environments where multiple agencies, media teams, and event staff rely on stable connections.

The JUNO Awards deployment reflects a broader shift in how agencies approach drone threats. Rather than focusing only on detection, agencies are seeking full situational awareness and controlled mitigation options.

D-Fend Solutions states that its systems are designed for use in complex environments. These include public safety, airports, and critical infrastructure. The company notes that its technology has been deployed in a range of real-world scenarios.

As drone use continues to grow, public safety agencies are adapting their strategies. Large events provide a clear example of how layered and non-disruptive solutions can support both safety and continuity.
