New Transport Canada authorization expands BVLOS drone missions in low-density areas at night
Volatus Aerospace has received a major approval from Transport Canada. The company can now conduct long-distance drone operations at night across Canada. These flights can take place in low-density areas, where fewer than 1,000 people live per square kilometer, and below 400 feet above ground level (AGL).
This national approval allows Volatus to perform important missions such as 24/7 border surveillance, facility security at night, thermal wildfire detection, search and rescue operations, and cargo delivery.
Expanding the Reach of Drone Operations
With this new approval, Volatus can now fly drones beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) at night. These flights will be operated remotely from the company’s Operations Control Centre.
Flying at night has several advantages. There is less air and ground traffic, which lowers risks. Some drone sensors are designed specifically for night use. For example, thermal sensors used in wildfire detection work better at night when temperature differences are greater. This helps identify heat sources that could lead to new fires.
In search and rescue missions, darkness often stops ground teams. Drones equipped with infrared cameras can continue the search throughout the night. This could save lives by finding people faster.

This approval also opens the door for nighttime deliveries. Hospitals and other facilities that rely on time-sensitive transport of medical supplies can now benefit from drone service at any hour.
Volatus sees this approval as the beginning of a larger effort. The company plans to apply for more Special Flight Operations Certificates (SFOCs) that will support drone missions across Canada. These will focus on key sectors like pipeline and utility transmission inspections.
