Pilot Program Showcases Innovation in Airspace Safety Amid Rising Drone Concerns
El Paso International Airport recently partnered with D-Fend Solutions to enhance airspace safety during the Amigo Airsho. The airshow, held after a 12-year hiatus, attracted over 60,000 spectators and featured aerial performances and aircraft displays. The Airport implemented a counter-drone technology pilot program to protect attendees and ensure safe operations in restricted airspace.
Tony Nevarez, Aviation Director at El Paso International Airport, emphasized the importance of the initiative. “At the El Paso International Airport, we were excited to see the Amigo Airsho return to the community,” he said. “To enhance safety, we partnered with D-Fend Solutions to monitor airspace over the event grounds and ensure drones were kept away from aircraft and spectators. The pilot program was a success, demonstrating our commitment to innovation and public safety.”
Tackling Drone Safety Challenges
The event provided a critical testing ground for counter-drone measures in a complex and active airspace. By detecting and mitigating unauthorized drones, the program successfully maintained security throughout the airshow. This demonstration highlights the potential of counter-drone technology in similar high-stakes environments.
Unauthorized drone activity is a growing concern nationwide as drones become more accessible. The Federal AviationAdministration (FAA) mandates registration for drones exceeding 55 pounds and requires operators to obtain prior authorization when flying near controlled airspace. Events like the Amigo Airsho underscore the need for proactive measures to manage drone activity effectively and prevent disruptions.
A Broader Context for Counter-Drone Technology
Counter-drone technology has gained attention in the United States as Congress examines incidents involving drones near critical infrastructure, particularly in New York and New Jersey. These sightings have raised questions about airspace security and highlighted the importance of deploying advanced solutions to address both current and emerging threats.
