Prosumer Drones Continue to Gain Ground in Pro Video with SlingStudio Solutions

Sling Media, a subsidiary of DISH Network Corp, has introduced a platform compatible with DJI drones.

It’s a match that works on both sides.  As DJI works to raise it’s profile in the professional market, Sling Media – with the SlingStudio system – is moving to broaden it’s customer base into the consumer market.  SlingStudio, says the company, is a “multi-camera production system that changes how directors, of all skill levels, can think about creating and sharing professional-grade video content.”

For a new cadre of small, independent drone filmmakers and videographers who rise to stardom on YouTube, SlingStudio offers a pro solution, broadcasting live to streaming platforms like Facebook Live and YouTube.  And for filmmakers who are working with a larger fleet, the system offers the capability to wirelessly connect up to 10 DJI drone systems, cameras and smartphones.

“SlingStudio is the first affordable, wireless and portable multi-camera video production and live broadcasting system optimized for aerial footage,” says the company.  “The remote controller of compatible DJI drones plugs into SlingStudio’s HDMI input port, or connects to SlingStudio wirelessly via the CameraLink wireless adapter.  The drone streams live footage to its controller base, which then routes the video to the SlingStudio hub via the HDMI or CameraLink connection. This allows the drone to send high-quality video to SlingStudio from anywhere within the drone’s recommended range.”

Starting at around $1000 plus accessories – not to mention the cost of the drones – the system isn’t for casual photographers.  But compared to other drone videography solutions, and the cost of industrial drones to carry heavy cameras, it’s certainly an option in reach of smaller film company or university.

“SlingStudio simplifies production for videographers looking to film with multiple drones, or drones in combination with ground cameras,” said Vivek Khemka, DISH chief technology officer. “Its wireless, drone friendly setup allows drone pilots to capture footage without being limited by cords or cumbersome film equipment.”

And for DJI, the partnership highlights the Phantom, Inspire and Matrice drones as professional grade solutions.

“With SlingStudio, creative professionals now have the freedom and flexibility to tell a story from multiple points of view in real time,” said Ryan Tong, Director of Marketing at DJI. “We’re excited to see how crews flying DJI drones will incorporate this technology to bring a new element of storytelling to their live video projects.”
