Great news for fans of both DJI drones and Chinese New Year: The world’s most popular drone manufacturer is bringing out a special edition version of the Phantom 4 to celebrate the incoming Year of the Rooster.
Chinese market leader DJI collaborated with illustrator and designer Martin Sati to bring some funk to the popular Phantom 4. The special edition drone is the latest in the trend of making quadcopters more aesthetically pleasing, as we saw only a few days ago with news that a San Francisco artist is knitting sweaters for drones.
According to DJI, “Sati’s design features the phoenix as the centerpiece, a symbol of good fortune and happiness in Chinese mythology. He also drew inspiration from the four basic elements of nature – air, fire, water and earth – and reflected each of these elements in his design.”
Aside from the new jazzy color scheme, the Chinese New Year Edition of the Phantom 4 is no different to the original. Not that that’s a bad thing. You’ll get the same onboard intelligence that made this arguably the most successful drone of 2016.
This Chinese New Year drone is a classic case of upcycling
Having ended 2016 with major product releases, including the Mavic Pro, the Phantom 4 Pro and the new Inspire 2, DJI is understandably looking to shift the remaining Phantom 4s that the company has stashed away. Over the festive season the price of the Phantom 4 dropped below $1,000 for the first time. It’s still available for $999 and we only anticipate it dropping lower in the months ahead.
With that in mind, this Chinese New Year edition comes at the perfect time as the company looks to sell remaining Phantom 4s for a good price. However, for a more jazzy Phantom 4 you will be paying $1,199 – that’s $200 more than the original. Do you love Chinese New Year that much? These special edition models will be sold in Apple Stores, DJI Flagship Stores and on the DJI website. It will start shipping from January 23rd.
