Having purchased a minority stake in the Hasselblad Group, the Swedish photography experts famous for medium format cameras, DJI has now launched a joint offering combining the best that the two companies have to offer.
Together they will offer a fully integrated high-end aerial camera-platform combo. The combo will be comprised of Hasselblad’s aerial medium-format camera, the A5D, and DJI’s professional flying platform, the M600. The combination of the M600 and the A5D will provide users with some of the most advanced aerial optics kits in the world, integrated into a reliable and established DJI aerial platform.
It seems like a progression that was inevitable. ‘Combining best-in-class aerial optics with the world’s most powerful aerial platform is a natural development for DJI and Hasselblad. We are delighted to provide this unique bundle to professional photographers, surveyors and mappers’, said Perry Oosting, CEO of Hasselblad.
DJI and Hasselblad are yet to announce a release date or price. But as the M600 drone and Ronin-MX gimbal together cost $6,198, and Hasselblad’s A5D camera is expected to come in at over $25,000 (or potentially much more), it’s safe to say that this bundle is going to be a tool limited to seriously professional aerial photographers.
Hasselblad’s A5D was announced last summer, and will combine the world’s best optics and sensors with a modern, compact design. The sensors are almost twice the size of those used in today’s best 35 mm DSLR cameras and the A5D lens comes in 50 mm.
It’s expected that together Hasselblad and DJI will seek further collaborations in the future. DJI invested heavily in the Swedish giant late last year. Because of the price restrictions, it’s pretty doubtful that any Hasselblad products will directly end up in a consumer-level drone, but that doesn’t mean that lessons learned in this joint venture won’t influence future DJI product lines, such as the popular Phantom range.
