Sharper Shape Introduces AI-Powered Asset Insights for Utility Inspections

New Software Streamlines Utility Asset Management with Automated Component Identification and Defect Detection

Sharper Shape has launched Asset Insights, a new digital twin software designed to improve inspection and maintenance processes across the electric utility industry. The platform is part of Sharper Shape’s existing Asset Management module within the Sharper CORE platform, and it leverages AI and machine learning to automate key aspects of utility asset inspections.

Enhancing Inspection Efficiency and Risk Management

Asset Insights incorporates advanced machine learning for component identification and defect detection, aimed at simplifying the inspection process for utility companies and their partners. By reducing reliance on manual fieldwork, it offers a more efficient way to manage aging infrastructure and assess the condition of critical assets like powerlines and poles.

According to Glenn Colvin, VP of Product at Sharper Shape, “Keeping the lights on has never been harder for utilities and their partners. Industry players are facing an uphill battle against aging infrastructure and extreme weather events. On top of that, the added task of manual inspections and follow-up reporting creates another layer in their already busy workflow.”

Asset Insights tackles these challenges by streamlining data collection, asset identification, and defect detection. Its AI-driven tools can instantly analyze over 1,000 images with an accuracy rate exceeding 95%, helping utilities adhere to regulatory standards and maintain a reliable chain of evidence for inspections. The system identifies potential issues such as cracked insulators, rust, and transformer leaks, enhancing overall risk management for utility infrastructure.

Automated Defect Detection and Cloud-Based Platform

One of the standout features of Asset Insights is its Automated Defect Detection system. The platform currently recognizes more than 40 different distribution and transmission components, with plans to expand this capability further. The tool provides a clear and detailed picture of utility infrastructure conditions, aiding in proactive maintenance and infrastructure management.

William Paden, CEO at Soaring Eagle Technologies, a long-time user of Sharper Shape’s CORE platform, shared his perspective on the benefits of the new software: “The U.S. has over 5 million miles of powerlines and more than 180 million power poles, and while the utility industry has made great strides in inspection and maintenance through drone-based operations, AI adds an extra level of capability. With new, robust software like Asset Insights we’re able to deliver even more precise and reliable results to our clients, all accessible in a cloud-based platform that our team can look at straight from their phones.”

By using real-time data updates and cloud integration, the platform helps reduce inefficiencies associated with outdated maps and manual reports, saving time and resources for both utilities and external inspection service providers.
