The Latest Insights, the Best Commercial Practices: CompTIA’s Drone Interest Group

CompTIA®, the Computing Technology Industry Association, is a non-profit trade association which sets research-based standards and issues professional certifications for the information technology industry. It is one of the IT industry’s top trade associations – and now CompTIA is offering new services for the drone industry.

That’s a big step forward for the commercial drone industry.  With some codified standards and best practices, drone services companies can more easily establish their professional qualifications: enterprise organizations can more easily choose providers that meet their needs.   Interested companies should participate in CompTIA’s new drone interest group – and register here for the August 22 introductory webinar.

The following is a guest post by Scott Campbell, Senior Marketing Manager at CompTIA®.

Technology industry association CompTIA has launched a new Drone Interest Group, extending an invitation to anyone selling, influencing and creating unmanned aerial systems-focused solutions for business customers.

The Drone Interest Group, a subset of the organization’s Emerging Technology Community, will host its first open virtual meeting Aug. 22 at 1:00 pm ET. Attendees can learn more CompTIA’s latest drone-related research, standards, and other content, but they’re also encouraged to participate in an open discussion about business trends, successes, challenges and other UAS industry developments.

“UAS is such a high-growth, highly innovative industry that it was a no-brainer for CompTIA to launch our first market-specific interest group around drones,” said Annette Taber, senior vice president of industry outreach at CompTIA. “We want this to be a go-to destination where anyone involved in selling drones to businesses can get information, network with peers, learn about best practices, and ask questions. Ultimately, this group will belong to our members, not to us. Our goal is to provide the tools and content they need to accelerate their own success.”

The Drone Interest Group is the latest initiative by CompTIA to help companies position themselves as industry leaders in the UAS market, expected to reach $100 billion in annual sales by 2020, according to Goldman Sachs Research.

CompTIA also has a Drone Advisory Council comprised of industry leaders from hardware manufacturers, video and component manufacturers, mapping software, platform providers, insurance companies, experts in FAA regulations and policies, drone pilots and instructors, lawyers, and flight service providers.

Council members collaborate regularly to identify business opportunities, trends, and best practice standards in order to foster greater adoption and expansion of drone technologies. The council also works with CompTIA to develop UAS-related education, research, tools, certifications, and other business-enablement resources

Earlier this year, the council helped produce a Drone Standards and Best Practices report that details risk mitigation and safety, laws and regulations, flight operations, data security and more.

Scott Campbell has spent more than 20 years telling stories in the technology channel.  He is now the Senior Marketing Manager at CompTIA, helping members be successful.
