Belgian Unmanned Traffic Management provider Unifly expanded this week by establishing a new subsidiary, Unifly ApS, to be headquartered in Copenhagen. The company says the new firm will enhance customer support and development in the Scandinavia and Baltics regions.
Key to the new subsidiary was the hiring of drone veterans Peter Byrn as project manager and Tobias Lundby as technical business analyst
“I am proud of the setup of Unifly ApS as a subsidiary and the employment of Peter and Tobias, which highlights our progress as a company. With Peter and Tobias on the team, we are able to provide our partners with more intense support in the region,” Managing Director of Unifly ApS Ronni Winkler Østergaard said.
Byrn specializes in remote sensing, GIS, location intelligence and virtual 3D modeling. He has a master’s degree of Geographic Information Technologies from Aalborg University and Royal Technical University in Stockholm.
“Unifly is a technology-driven company where innovation, IT solutions and agility are all key elements. All of those elements line up perfectly with my engagement and enthusiasm,” Byrn said. “I also have a great personal interest in the drone industry in general. So, being part of all this within a company that is strongly going to influence the future, is very motivating and extremely exciting.”
As an analyst, Lundby brings a deep background in robotics engineering with a master’s degree in Unmanned Aerial Systems from the University of Southern Denmark with a thesis on UTM. His areas of focus include manual and autonomous drone operations, navigation in changing environments and Specific Operations Risk Assessment.
“When I received the offer to be a part of [Unifly’s] Scandinavian expansion, it was an obvious step in my career,” Lundby said.
The expansion comes on the heels of several recent wins for Unify:
- Last month, the company unveiled a new e-Identification and tracking solution for drones during the World ATM Congress in Madrid, the world’s largest international air traffic management exhibition and conference.
- In June, Unifly teamed up with Florida-based drone company Aeronyde to build an integrated, autonomous drone system for public-safety agencies. The UTM system will empower emergency responders to customize drone systems to fit any mission profile and agency size.
- In May, the company joined forces with UNICEF to create the first ever UTM drone corridor in Africa. The “humanitarian drone corridor” in Malawi serves as a dedicated unmanned flight-testing space and includes Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) testing in a territory spanning more than 1,900 square miles up to 1,300 feet above ground level.
