Remember when DJI came along and burst GoPro’s bubble after the Karma launch? Just as the Karma hype began to die down the Mavic Pro was unveiled, and it came out on top in almost every department. Now it looks as though DJI is stepping on GoPro’s toes once more, with the launch of a Smart TV app for Apple and Samsung users.

Technically GoPro won’t be troubled by the move. Since the Karma began to fall out of the sky the company’s share price took a similar trajectory. That led GoPro to close down its burgeoning Entertainment Division and think more cautiously about its aim to be a full-on media giant.

But still, the two companies appear to be destined to compete for the same target market in the coming months and years. Even though they are coming from different sides of the spectrum. DJI is primarily a drone company that’s started to shift towards camera technology and a more mainstream entertainment market. GoPro is aiming to move from cameras to drones, making aerial technology mainstream in the process.

In an obvious step towards targeting a more mainstream audience, DJI’s Smart TV App will be made available for smart TV platforms including the Samsung Tizen TV and Apple TV. It will open up drone photography to a whole new audience and will allow users to watch a variety of aerial content and 4k videos captured from around the world from their living room.

“We’ve made flying and capturing aerial footage easy with our drones, and now with the DJI Smart TV App, creators will have more ways to share their work with the world. This is really an opportunity for people to be inspired, intrigued, travel to places they would have never imagined and see the world in a whole new way,” said Paul Pan, Senior Product Manager.

Professional and Amateur Content?

No word yet on what kind of content DJI will be offering through the new Smart TV App. But we expect it to be an extension of the company’s Youtube channel, with features such as DJI Stories and showcases of the Chinese manufacturer’s drones. These could include the WRC series (below) and best bits from DJI’s social platform, SkyPixel.

Where to find DJI’s Smart TV App

The DJI Smart TV App is now available on Apple TV and Samsung Tizen TV platforms. Once their Smart TV is connected to the internet, users can browse for the DJI Smart TV App logo in the App Store. Once downloaded and installed, the DJI Smart TV App can then be activated without the need for registration.
