At a press conference yesterday in which he announced the release of the B4Ufly smartphone app, Commissioner Huerta of the FAA, reported that over 180,000 consumer drone users had registered their devices on the FAA’s recently launched registration system.
The FAA put the system in place in advance of the recent holiday season as they anticipated sales of drones to consumers approaching 700,000.
The FAA requires registration of those devices and failure to do so can result in fines up to $27,500.
However, there is currently no information on how drones were actually sold nor how many violators have been cited.
