Nifty Xmas light painting and a FAA Q&A on drone reg

In case you missed it the team at Ascending Technologies created a “light painting” wishing all a Merry Christmas. You can view it below.

And the FAA issued a Q&A regarding the drone registration system that was launched this week. The registration was set up to manage the anticipated growth in drone use among consumers and hobbyists. Anyone owing a drone that weighs more than two sticks of butter has to register. You can find details about the system and related coverage here.

The FAA addresses several common questions in addition to weight. For example, if you own multiple drones, you only need to register once. You have to carry proof of registration when you fly your drone and you could be fined up to $27,500 for failing to register.

Not all of it makes complete sense. For example, “If you operated your UAS before Dec. 21, 2015, you have until February 19, 2016 to register your UAS. If you purchase your UAS after Dec. 21, 2015, you must register before you operate it outdoors.” What if I purchased my drone before 12/21 but didn’t operate it until after 12/21?

You can find the complete Q&A here.

On a more cheerful note . . .
