#WhatsNext: The DJI Phantom X Concept

DJI has released a new video showcasing the Phantom X Concept RC-AVTI, and it is truly amazing to watch.

“We all loved the 1980s’ sci-fi visions of the future — the way drones zipped around, blending in as a natural part of everyday life. What if we told you the predictions made in these sci-fi classics are now reality? With the DJI Phantom X, we turn wide-eyed dreams of future possibilities into fact with multi-angle shooting, AI, obstacle avoidance and free-flight object tracking,” says DJI, and then goes on to demonstrate.

Emphasizing the capabilities of the drone for capturing action footage, the video describes the drone as a “tool for creativity.”  With enhanced capabilities to capture action or sports footage with a drone following an athlete or performer, we get beautiful -and fast- footage of a biker riding through the forest, as the drone ducks gracefully under tree branches to follow.

Some of these features are offered in DJI’s Phantom 3; ground-facing GPS allowing for great obstacle avoidance, speeds of 35 mph, and a great camera.  But more interesting are features that we haven’t seen before.  With a “Skywriting” feature, the Phantom X allows operators to paint gorgeous flight designs in the air.  Multi-cam synching is demonstrated with an operator synchronizing two drones to follow a biker from different angles, all from his smart watch.  And, because amazing footage is no fun if nobody else sees it, the video introduces a social media aspect to the technology, allowing footage to be shared with online communities.

The video features industry players from film, social media, and the art world.  The beautiful Chloe Bennet (Agent S.H.I.E.L.D.) sums up the drone industry’s hope for the future of drones in everyday life, saying: “It’s not just about technology… It’s really a lifestyle.”
