Dr Mirko Kovac, Director of the Aerial Robotics Lab and a team of Imperial PhD students unveiled their next generation drones that take inspiration from nature at a packed event at the Shard, London’s tallest building.
These new drones replicate the best characteristics found in flies, bees and spiders in nature.
They are designed to work in areas that up until now have been impossible for robots to function in. The team expect to soon be flying them across our cities, around wind turbines, underwater or even perched on trees.
Dr Mirko Kovac, Director of the Aerial Robotics Lab at Imperial College London explained that despite the negative press drones receive, they have potential to benefit society:
“Aerial robots can help us to monitor pollution, protect wildlife and assist in search and rescue operations. At Imperial we are working on autonomous construction and repair with swarms of aerial robots for future cities.
