The “DJI Stories” series will provide real life accounts of non-professional pilots who achieve tasks that were impossible just a few years ago.
The first of these shorts, called “Above the Flames”, features the Branford, Connecticut Fire Department. Firefighters from this department used a DJI Phantom to gain an aerial view of a dangerous quarry fire on January 30, 2014.
The ability to immediately get in the air and assess the fire helped them make better informed decisions in putting out the flame and reduce the risk to firefighters on the scene.
“We really credit that tiny little camera and that tiny little machine that helped us see that fire and be able to put that fire out,” said Jack Ahern, Branford Fire Chief.
This story was widely reported in regional media at the time and for the first time introduced the possibility that affordable, high performance multirotors, such as the Phantom, could be used for firefighting.
