3D Robotics Releases X8+ as a Flying “Intelligent Tool”

bb7a0968_zps38339bcfAccording to drone manufacturer 3D Robotics, its latest release, the X8+, is not just an out-of-the-box UAV solution, it’s also an “intelligent tool.”

The X8+ is described as a “heavy-duty copter with lifting power that extends payload options to the professional realm — electromagnetic delivery, still photography, mapping, modeling, and significant options.” In addition to offering expandable payload capacity, the X8+ is designed to offer professional grade videography and map-generating/3D-modeling capabilities.

Users can attach, for example, a GoPro and add gimbals for other cameras and sensors as needed. Customers can “collect aerial data in automated and infinitely repeatable flight paths, gather data beyond the visible spectrum, generate point clouds for precision survey, and can even be outfitted with magnets for real delivery potential,” the company claims.

The X8+ (an octocopter) can handle a maximum weight of 1 kilograms including its payload of 800 grams in batteries. The UAV’s frame will fold into a compact shape which can be used for search and rescue, agriculture, mining, construction and professional cinematography.

As with many 3DR models, the X8+ offers the addition of the 3PV Follow Me mode which will “follow” a GPS-enabled Android device in addition to mission planning software. With a flight time of 15 minutes, the X8+ includes a controller with live on-screen flight data, flight battery and charger, ground station radio with USB and Android adapters. Users can customize the X8+ by adding a GoPro or the Tarot T-2D brushless gimbal, which two-axis stabilization technology to ensure stable video in any flight condition. The gimbal comes pre-configured and tuned for a smooth out-of-the-box experience. The kit includes: a pre-assembled Tarot gimbal, a mounting plate, and required cables and hardware.

The X8+ retails at $1,350 (3DR’s FPV kit — $349.99).
