Tennessee Titans Pushing for Tighter Drone Regulations

A new push to keep drones grounded is coming from an unlikely source: the Tennessee Titans.

Drones can currently be flown almost anywhere, but the Channel 4 I-Team has learned that the Titans would like to see tougher laws for the new technology.

While the Federal Aviation Administration continues to work out its rules regulating drones, drone enthusiasts have found a perfect backdrop in Nashville.

A YouTube video shows a drone flying between the goal posts at LP Field, while another shows a drone hovering above the city’s Fourth of July fireworks show.

Flights like this might be harder to make in the future if the Titans have their way.

The I-Team obtained a letter sent from the Titans to Metro police asking for their help in getting tougher drone legislation.

“Our suggestion is that we make contact with our Tennessee Legislature and get support for a statewide bill that the City of Nashville can adopt,” the Titans’ director of security wrote. “We would like legislation to cover large events and our practices. One possibility is that the person who wants to fly a drone be required to obtain a permit for use anywhere near an event or practice.”

Local drone user Gary Ashton hosts a big tailgate at LP Field. He used a drone to capture video of the tailgate.

“To me, that makes sense,” Ashton said. “It’s a public event. There’s hundreds of thousands of people there, so you don’t want something that’s flying around that people don’t really have any control over.”

Robert Hartline captured the footage of the fireworks show with his drone.

“I think it would be a bad idea to fly over the stadium,” Hartline said. “I wouldn’t be comfortable doing it, although the city has fighter jets flying over a stadium full of people. I don’t know what’s scarier: a 5-pound piece of plastic or jet fuel.”
