Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley has announced the creation of the Alabama Drone Task Force, which will be in charge of reviewing the necessary requirements to further the state’s potential use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in areas of agriculture, conservation and law enforcement.
“The task force will review Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requirements for drone use in Alabama and establish the necessary guidelines,” explains Gov. Bentley. “We have assembled a strong group with extensive knowledge and experience to serve on the task force, and I look forward to their recommendations for a statewide plan.”
The force consists of five members: John McMillian, agriculture and industries commissioner; John Cooper, transportation director; Gunter Guy, conservation and natural resources commissioner; Spencer Collier, Alabama law enforcement agency secretary; and Jimmy Reynolds, Montgomery Airport Authority board member.
McMillian will serve as chair of the task force. The governor has requested members accomplish the following:
- Study the requirements for UAV operations in Alabama, as well as the process for FAA approval;
- Apply for necessary FAA waivers for UAV use in Alabama airspace;
- Meet with stakeholders to discuss plans for UAV use;
- Recommend a statewide plan for UAV use in Alabama.
The first meeting of the Drone Task Force is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 29, in Montgomery. The statewide drone management plan is due to the governor before Jan. 15, 2015.
