TODAY Show – Feds Crack Down on ‘Shoot a Drone’ Gatherings

Video: A new twist on skeet shooting – using drones for target practice – has authorities turning up at some firing ranges to stop the practice. The Feds say the gatherings are illegal. NBC’s Kerry Sanders reports.

First off, I am amazed and impressed that ‘shoot a drone’ gatherings are a thing. And after seeing it in action, I get it.

I think skeet shooting is loads of fun. And introducing an extra element like a remote control target looks awesome.

But I would not qualify these machines as drones. There are no cameras and no autonomy to speak of, so it is probably more accurate to say these are model aircraft.

As such, it is without question that the FAA has no jurisdiction over these gatherings.
