Twitter Gets its Own Selfie-obsessed Drone: @dronie

Twitter has unveiled an official @dronie account dedicated to recording selfies and video footage from drones.

Launched this week to mark Cannes Lions, a festival and awards ceremony in the South of France which celebrates the best of the advertising, marketing and creative communication industries, the account offers a different perspective on the event.

@dronie’s first post is a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it Vine clip of Joel Lunenfeld, VP of Global Brand Strategy at the social media platform and the actor Sir Patrick Stewart waving from the ground as the drone pulls into the sky, captioned “A new bromance is born!”

 

The brand will be sharing footage throughout the week-long event (June 15-21) using the unmanned vehicles. It is not yet clear if the account will remain open following the festival.

Social media-connected drones are shaping up to be the marketing tool of 2014 — earlier this year Brahma Beer launched “Air Brahma,” a concept which allowed beach-lovers to order a pint via Twitter and have the beverages delivered via drone.
