Peru’s countryside could become a safer place for residents with the help of unmanned aircraft.
According to La Republica, three companies, Avdrone, Aerovision, and Mes Sigma, will run the program. The drones will be used to monitor changes in soil in high-risk areas, where every year, deaths, disappearances, injuries, and significant material damages are caused by landslides.
Jorge Donayre, an engineer with Mes Sigma, explained the technology to La Republica: “The cameras on the drone register the changes and appearance of the soil after rain. This information will allow us to predict with 99% confidence […] a rockslide of landslide.”
The drones carry cameras that allow them to register changes in temperature, helping analysts predict landslides and alert local disaster prevention authorities as soon as possible.
Peru’s Ministry of Culture currently uses drones to comprehensively map archaeological sites. La Republica reports that leaders in the agriculture, energy, health, mining, and communications sectors have also put the technology to good use.
