Milan’s famed cathedral is in need of repairs after it was hit by a camera-equipped drone that was being operated by a group of tourists.
Three holidaymakers, all from South Korea, were snapping aerial photos of the attraction when the mishap occurred.
It’s the latest in a series of drone-related incidents involving tourists, who have sparked security scares in major cities and led to the remote-control devices being banned near landmarks and in national parks around the world.
In the Milan incident, three men, aged 35, 39 and 42, were flying the drone around the roof of the Gothic cathedral, which is the fifth largest church in the world, on Monday morning.
The small device caught the attention of Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo, the cathedral’s guards, who alerted police, The Local reported.
The men were still operating the drone when police arrived at the square in front of the church.
But they soon lost control of the drone, which crashed into a construction cable on the roof, near the statue of Madonnina.
The crash caused minor damage to the cathedral, and the men were questioned by police, The Local reported.
It is not known if they will be charged with a crime.
They were in Milan to give a presentation at the Korean pavilion at Expo 2015.
Milan Cathedral was under continuous construction and renovation projects for nearly 600 years until it was officially completed in 1965.
