From my time within the aerospace sector I’ve acquired a growing fascination with the amount of work that goes into the industry; even more so with the astonishing technological advancements that are set to come as a result of this. One of the hottest topics in aerospace technology at present is the advancement of UAVs, or ‘drones’. The majority of the public is aware of the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles from their use within the military in recent years, and indications now point to the concept of drone technology making its way into commercial flights within the current decade.
It was a year ago this month that the first unmanned passenger plane was flown within British airspace. UK tech consortium Astraea, comprising of BAE Systems, Qinetiq and others, have pioneered the development with tests having been run since 2012. Drone technology that could allow for pilots to remotely control aircraft is impressive enough, but even more incredible leaps are due to occur with recent developments in ‘drone swarm’ technology, an advance developed by Boeing that is already seeing military use.
